Translations

A few days ago, I wrote a blog post introducing our Management Portal, the software that makes it possible for our clients to launch and manage their own cloud server. Unfortunately, the portal sites are currently only available in English, which could be a barrier for some users. Nextcloud, the software our platform is based on, does a great job of making their interface multilingual, and we’d like to extend this to the rest of our services as well. However, the Gibberfish team members don’t speak dozens of languages, so we’d like your help.

If you’re fluent in a language other than English, we’d like to ask for 15 minutes of your time to help us translate our pages into your language. It should be quick work, and it’s a great way to contribute to an open source project, even if you’re not a programmer! Our portal is built using the Django web framework, which fortunately makes this kind of thing really easy to do.

All we need are text files that pair the English phrases that we use in our templates with translations. We created a sample one in Spanish here, which you can look at to get the idea. It was made using Google Translate, so it could probably use a bit of work from a real hispanohablante:

msgid "Enter encryption passphrase"
msgstr "Ingrese la frase de contraseña de encriptación"

If you’re comfortable using git, we welcome pull requests to our i18n branch, otherwise you can just copy the provided sample, edit it, and email it to gro.hsifrebbignull@ofni. We really appreciate the help!
